Garden golf and neighbours: plan for misses, noise and structures

Think through shot direction, shared garden use and local planning requirements before installing a garden golf area.

Choose the direction of play before choosing a net. Look beyond the target at the places an escaped ball could reach, including paths, neighbouring gardens and windows. If you cannot arrange dependable containment, use a different space or a form of practice that does not involve full shots.

Plan the household routine

Decide who can enter the garden during practice and where others will wait. Put ball collection between sessions, rather than allowing someone to collect while another person hits. Children and pets need to remain outside the hitting area. A net is not a substitute for controlling access.

Discuss use before it becomes a problem

Think about the sound of club impact and balls hitting a screen or target, especially in a small garden with hard boundaries. Agree sensible session times with your household and listen if neighbours raise concerns. We cannot give a universal quietness rating or a distance that guarantees no disturbance.

Check the planning position for a permanent structure

Planning Portal's outbuildings guidance covers garden enclosures as well as buildings, but whether a particular project is permitted depends on its circumstances. Its cited guidance applies to England. Check the relevant planning authority for your nation and address before installing a permanent cage or building.

Do not assume that a structure is exempt because it is described as sports equipment, or that a general online guide accounts for restrictions on your property. Take a drawing, dimensions and proposed location to the authority if you need clarification. This is general planning information, not legal advice.

Inspect before each session

Check the net, panel, frame and fixings against the maker's instructions. Stop if anything is damaged or the arrangement has shifted. The garden net guide explains what to record before buying; the space checker cannot assess containment or planning permission.
