Golf simulator room size and ceiling height

Plan the screen, tracking distances and the actual golfer's swing separately when measuring a simulator room.

A launch monitor's minimum tracking distance is not a complete simulator room specification. You need space for the enclosure, ball position, device, screen movement and the golfer. The ceiling must also accommodate the actual player's club path above the finished hitting surface.

Build the plan from front to back

  1. Choose the intended screen or net and record its external dimensions.
  2. Find its required rear clearance and installation instructions.
  3. Mark the ball position specified for the system.
  4. Add any monitor-to-ball distance required by the exact model.
  5. Check access, cable routes and space around the golfer.

Do not simply add a net's advertised depth to a monitor's minimum room depth. The measurements may describe overlapping areas, or use different reference points. Sketch the components and label what each measurement starts and ends at.

Measure the lowest obstruction

Use the finished floor or mat surface as your reference. Beams, lights, garage door tracks and projector mounts can sit below the main ceiling. A room that looks tall in a photograph may have a low obstruction exactly where the club travels.

A manufacturer's suggested room height cannot certify every player's swing. Avoid a full-speed trial in a confined room. If clearance is uncertain, ask an installer to assess the arrangement before buying or using it.

Decide who will use it

A layout for one right-handed player may not suit a left-handed visitor. Draw each intended stance and ask how the monitor changes position between players. Check where spectators can sit without entering the hitting area.

The sim room planner helps organise dimensional checks. It is a planning aid, not an installation approval. If your space is a garage, work through the garage-specific checklist too.
